Converting format, compressing, resizing and removing the background are different operations that often get mixed up. This guide helps you pick the right one for what you actually need to do with the image.

Format, weight, dimensions and quality aren't the same thing

  • Format: the file type (JPG, PNG, WEBP...). Changing it doesn't reduce the pixel size, though it can reduce the file weight.
  • Weight (compression): how many megabytes the file takes up. It's reduced by recompressing the data, and in lossy formats (JPG, WEBP) it can lower visual quality somewhat.
  • Dimensions: the width and height in pixels. Resizing changes how many pixels the image has, not how much each one weighs.
  • Quality: the level of detail and sharpness. Over-compressing, or shrinking and later enlarging, can lose it; AI enhancement tools try to recover it, within their limits.

Which format fits which use

JPG doesn't support transparency and compresses with loss: good for photos. PNG and WEBP both support transparency; WEBP usually weighs less than PNG at a similar quality. The available conversions cover JPG, PNG and WEBP in both directions, plus converting from AVIF, HEIC (iPhone photos) and SVG to JPG or PNG, though not the other way around.

Transparency and background removal

Removing an image's background uses an AI segmentation model that identifies the main subject, not a manual cutout: it works best with clear contrast between subject and background, and can leave imperfect edges on hair, smoke or very thin objects. The result exports as a transparent PNG.

AI upscaling: what it can and can't do

Resolution increase multiplies pixels by 2x or 4x using an AI model trained to reconstruct detail, not simple interpolation; even so, it doesn't invent information that wasn't in the original image, and it won't turn a very blurry photo into a perfectly sharp one. It works best on images that already have some real detail to build on.

Memory and browser compatibility limits

Everything processes on your own device, so the practical limit depends on its memory: very large images (several hundred megapixels) or several operations in a row on modest devices can slow down or fail to finish. AI-powered tools (background removal, quality enhancement) need more memory than a simple format change.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting a photo to another format improve its quality?

No: changing format doesn't add detail that wasn't already in the original image, it only changes how it's stored.

Which formats support transparency?

PNG and WEBP support transparency. JPG doesn't: if you convert an image with transparency to JPG, the transparent background gets filled with a solid color.

Does AI upscaling work on any photo?

It works best on photos that already have some detail. On very blurry, very low-resolution, or heavily compressed images, the result still has limitations.

Why doesn't background removal come out perfect on every photo?

It's an AI segmentation model: it works best with good contrast between subject and background, and can struggle more with fine edges like loose hair or fur.
