Tools in this category

DOCX, ODT, EPUB, Markdown, TXT, HTML and PDF cover different needs: editing, publishing as an e-book, writing with lightweight markup, or just reading. This guide helps you pick the right output format and know what's kept and what's lost in each conversion.

Which output format to choose

  • DOCX: to keep editing the document in Word or similar, with formatting (headings, lists, bold, italic).
  • PDF: to share a document with a fixed look, meant for reading or printing, not editing.
  • EPUB: for e-books, meant for e-readers and reading apps, with text that adapts to the screen.
  • Markdown, TXT or HTML: for lightweight text, without complex formatting, easy to reuse elsewhere (a website, a README, a plain text editor).

Extracting text vs. converting with structure

Extracting to TXT pulls out only the content, as plain text, with no headings or formatting: useful for reusing the content elsewhere. Converting to DOCX, PDF or EPUB preserves the document's structure (headings, paragraphs, lists, bold, italic) as far as the target format allows, not just loose text.

What can get lost in a conversion

Converting DOCX to PDF keeps headings, paragraphs, lists, bold and italic, but not the exact page layout, tables or original images; non-Latin characters (emoji, Chinese, Arabic...) may not display correctly. Similar limits apply to conversions between other formats (ODT, EPUB, Markdown, HTML): the further the target format is from the original in capabilities (for example, going from a document with complex styles to Markdown, which is plain text with simple markup), the more layout elements get lost.

Readers and previewers

Besides converting, you can open an EPUB directly in your browser to read it without downloading or installing a separate reader.

Privacy and local processing

The documents you convert here are processed in your browser: they aren't uploaded to a server to generate the output file, which downloads straight from your device.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting DOCX to PDF keep the document's exact layout?

No: it keeps headings, paragraphs, lists and emphasis (bold, italic), but it doesn't reproduce the original page layout, tables or images.

Can I edit a PDF after converting it to DOCX?

Yes, the result is an editable Word document, though how faithful it is to the original PDF depends on how complex its layout is.

What's the difference between extracting text and converting to another format?

Extracting text gives you the raw content with no formatting. Converting to another document format keeps the structure (headings, lists, emphasis) as long as that format supports it.

Do emoji and non-Latin characters display correctly in every conversion?

Not always: in some conversions to PDF, non-Latin characters (Chinese, Arabic, emoji) may not display correctly.
