Online compressed file tools

Open, extract, create and convert ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ and GZ archives directly in your browser, without uploading anything to a server.

Tools in this category

Compressing, creating, extracting, viewing and converting are different operations worth telling apart before picking a tool. This guide helps you find the right one and explains what actually sets ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR and GZ apart.

How to choose based on your goal

  • Create an archive: packages several loose files into one, in ZIP format.
  • Extract: pulls all the files out of an archive onto your device.
  • View contents without extracting: check what's inside (names, sizes, folders) before downloading anything.
  • Convert: turns an archive from one format into another, usually into ZIP for compatibility.

ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR and GZ: practical differences

ZIP is the most compatible format: almost any operating system opens it without installing anything, and it's the only format you can create from scratch here (besides CBZ, meant for comics). RAR and 7Z can be opened, extracted and converted to ZIP, but not created as original RAR or 7Z files. TAR simply bundles several files into one, without compressing their content; TAR.GZ is that same bundle, compressed with gzip. GZ, unlike TAR, compresses a single file or stream, not a bundle of several.

Passwords and protected files

Password-protected RAR files (RAR4 and RAR5) can be opened, extracted and converted to ZIP if you know the password. Password-protected 7Z files aren't supported yet. ZIP, TAR and GZ have no password-related feature here.

Comics in CBZ and CBR

CBZ and CBR are comic formats that are, under the hood, a ZIP or a RAR full of images, one per page. You can read them directly, extract their images, convert them to PDF, or build a new CBZ from your own images.

Create a CBZ from images

If you have a comic in RAR and want the more compatible format, you can convert the CBR to CBZ, or pull the loose images out of a CBZ or a CBR.

Real browser limits

Everything processes on your own device, so the practical limit depends on its memory: very large archives or ones packed with lots of files can take longer or, on devices with little memory, fail to finish. A damaged or incomplete archive may fail to open or extract; there's no repair tool here.

Privacy

The files you upload to compress, extract or convert never leave your device: the whole process happens in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Can I create a RAR or 7Z file here?

No: RAR and 7Z can only be opened, extracted and converted to ZIP. Creating a brand-new archive is only available in ZIP format (or CBZ for comics).

Can I open a password-protected RAR?

Yes, if it's RAR4 or RAR5 and you know the password. Password-protected 7Z files aren't supported yet.

What happens if I try to open a damaged or incomplete file?

It may fail to open or extract. There's no guaranteed recovery and no repair tool.

What's the difference between TAR and TAR.GZ?

TAR bundles several files into one without compressing them. TAR.GZ is that same bundle compressed with gzip, so it takes up less space.
