Optimize and repair
Before picking a tool it helps to know exactly what kind of operation you need: creating a PDF from another format isn't the same as organizing its pages, shrinking its size, or extracting its content. This guide separates the operations that most often get confused.
How to choose based on your goal
- Create or convert to PDF: start from an image (JPG, PNG) or a document (Word, ODT, Markdown, TXT) and generate a new PDF.
- Organize pages: merge several PDFs into one, split one into several, extract or remove specific pages, reorder or rotate them.
- Reduce the file size: compress an existing PDF without touching the page count or layout.
- Extract content: pull the text (or a table as CSV/XLSX) from a PDF with selectable text, or use OCR if it's a scan.
- Protect, unlock or repair: add or remove a password, or attempt to rebuild a damaged file.
Compressing isn't the same as reorganizing pages
Compressing a PDF shrinks it by recompressing the images it contains; the text stays selectable and the page count doesn't change. If what you need is to remove pages or split the document, that's a different operation.
Extracting text vs. using OCR
If your PDF has selectable text (you can highlight it with the mouse), text extraction pulls it out directly. If it's actually a scanned image, you need OCR: it recognizes the text inside the image, but the result can contain recognition errors, especially with low-quality scans, and for now it only recognizes Spanish and English text, regardless of the interface language.
Real limits of browser-side processing
Everything happens in your browser, without uploading the file to a server, so the practical limit depends on the memory available on your device: a very long PDF or one with many high-resolution images can take longer or, on devices with little memory, fail to finish.
Privacy
The PDF files you process here are never uploaded to a server: the operation runs in your browser and the result downloads straight from your own device.
Frequently asked questions
Can I merge a PDF that has a password?
Not directly: you first need to unlock it if you know the password. A protected PDF can't be opened or combined without it.
Does compressing a PDF reduce text quality?
No: the text isn't touched, only the internal images get recompressed. If the PDF has no images, compression may barely reduce the size.
Does the extracted text keep the original formatting?
No, it doesn't keep the layout (columns, tables, fonts): you get plain text, in the order it appears in the document.
Can any damaged PDF be repaired?
There's no guarantee: the tool attempts to rebuild mild-to-moderate damage, but a badly damaged file may not be recoverable.
