Remove the password from a protected PDF, as long as you know it, directly in your browser. Useful when you no longer need a document to be encrypted, but still have to type the password every time you open it.

Opens the PDF using the password you provide and re-saves it without encryption. This isn't a way to 'crack' an unknown password — you need to already know the document's current password.

Use cases

  • Remove the password from your own PDF so you don't have to type it every time you open it.
  • Prepare an old protected document for archiving without encryption.
  • Simplify access to a PDF shared within a trusted team.

How it works

  1. 1

    Upload your protected PDF

Drop the file in or select it from your device.

  2. 2

    Enter the password

The same one you normally use to open it.

  3. 3

    Download the password-free PDF

It will now open directly, with no prompt.

Technical details

Uses pdf-lib to decrypt the document with the given password. If the PDF uses an encryption method the library doesn't support, or the password is wrong, you get a specific error instead of a corrupted file.

Frequently asked questions

Can I unlock a PDF without knowing the password?

No — this tool needs the correct password to open the document; it doesn't try to guess or brute-force it.

What happens if the password is wrong?

You get a clear notice that the password isn't correct (or that the encryption type isn't supported), with no file generated.
