Converting, extracting audio, trimming and compressing are different operations worth telling apart before picking a tool. This guide helps you find the right one based on the result you're after.
How to choose based on the result you want
- Convert format: turns a video or audio file from one format into another (for example, MOV to MP4 or WAV to MP3).
- Extract or remove audio: pulls the audio track out of a video, or removes it if you only want the picture.
- Trim: keeps a specific part of a video or audio file, discarding the rest.
- Compress: reduces the file size, usually at the cost of some quality.
- Adjust bitrate, speed or volume: changes one specific characteristic of the audio without changing its format.
Changing the extension isn't the same as converting
A video file has a container (the file format, like MP4, MOV or WEBM) and one or more codecs (how the video and audio are encoded inside that container). Just changing a file's extension doesn't convert it: the internal content stays the same and it likely won't play correctly. Actually converting means re-encoding the file into a compatible format, which here runs on FFmpeg executed in your browser via WebAssembly.
Quality and re-encoding
Converting or compressing a video or audio file involves re-encoding it, which can introduce some quality loss compared to the original, especially when compressing heavily. Raising the bitrate or output quality doesn't recover information already lost in an earlier compression: if the source file is already heavily compressed, the result won't improve beyond that point.
Processing time and browser limits
The whole process runs in your browser, without uploading the file to a server, so how long a conversion or compression takes depends directly on your device's power and the file's size: long or high-resolution videos can take several minutes, and on devices with little memory some operation may fail to finish.
Privacy
The video and audio files you process here are never uploaded to a server: the conversion, trimming or compression runs in your own browser.
Frequently asked questions
Does changing a file's extension convert it to another format?
No: renaming the extension doesn't change how the content is encoded. You need an actual conversion, which re-encodes the file.
How long does converting a video take?
It depends on the file size and your device's power: everything runs in your browser, so long or heavy videos can take several minutes.
Does raising the bitrate improve the quality of an already-compressed audio file?
No: it can't recover information already lost the first time it was compressed, it only increases the file size.
Does trimming a video or audio file lose quality?
Trimming usually involves re-encoding the resulting clip, which can introduce a small quality loss compared to the original.
