Convert M4A to MP3 online

Convert a M4A file to MP3 directly in your browser — the file is never uploaded to a server.

Processed on your device via WebAssembly. Nothing is sent to any server.

or click to select it

Convert an M4A file (the typical audio format from iPhone, iTunes and many recording apps) into MP3, a format supported by virtually every player, directly in your browser.

M4A typically holds AAC audio inside an MP4-derived container. The tool decodes that AAC and re-encodes it as MP3, an older but universally compatible format for cars, portable players and older software.

Use cases

  • Turn voice memos or recordings from an iPhone into a format any device supports.
  • Prepare music exported from iTunes/Apple Music for an older MP3 player.
  • Share an M4A file with someone whose software doesn't recognize it.

How it works

  1. 1

    Upload your M4A file

Drop the file in or select it from your device.

  2. 2

Adjust the bitrate if you want

A high automatic quality is used by default; you can set a specific bitrate in the options.

  3. 3

    Download the MP3

Once it's done, download the resulting file.

Technical details

Runs ffmpeg.wasm in your browser. AAC usually sounds a bit better than MP3 at the same bitrate, so converting to MP3 can involve a small perceptible quality loss at low bitrates; with the automatic quality setting (high VBR) the difference is hard to notice.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my recorder save as M4A instead of MP3?

Many apps (including the iPhone Voice Memos app) default to AAC/M4A because it usually gives better quality at a smaller size than MP3 at the same bitrate.

Is there a file size limit?

Audio files up to 300 MB work reliably on most devices.
