Technical details
- The first conversion downloads the HEIC decoder (about 3 MB, based on libheif compiled to WebAssembly); your photo never leaves your device.
- The JPG is saved at 90% quality, a good balance for photos.
- The photo's metadata (date, camera, location) isn't carried over to the JPG.
- Limits: one image at a time, up to 25 MB and 40 megapixels.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my iPhone photos in HEIC?
It's the format Apple uses by default since iOS 11 because it takes up less space than JPG at similar quality, but not every device and program can open it.
Can I stop my iPhone from saving HEIC?
Yes: in Settings > Camera > Formats, choose "Most Compatible" and new photos will be saved as JPG. The ones already in HEIC will still need converting.
