Technical details
- PNG is lossless, but it doesn't improve the JPG: it keeps the decoded pixels exactly, including any compression artifacts already there.
- For photos, the PNG is usually several times larger than the original JPG. It's only worth it if a program requires PNG or you'll edit the image repeatedly.
- The conversion doesn't create transparency: the photo's background is still there. To remove it, use the remove background tool.
- EXIF metadata (camera, date, GPS location) isn't copied to the new file; phone photo orientation is applied to the pixels, so the image doesn't come out rotated.
- Limits: one image at a time, up to 25 MB and 40 megapixels.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting to PNG improve quality?
No, PNG can't recover detail already lost when the original JPG was compressed; it simply avoids further loss from this point on.
Why is the PNG so much larger than the JPG?
Because PNG stores every pixel losslessly, while JPG discards detail the eye barely notices. For a 3 MB JPG photo, the PNG can easily exceed 10 MB.
