Decodes the PNG image and re-encodes it as WEBP, which supports transparency just like PNG but with considerably smaller files.
Use cases
- Reducing the weight of icons and logos with transparency.
- Optimizing website images without losing the alpha channel.
- Saving storage space.
How it works
- 1
Upload your PNG image
Drag the file in or pick one from your device.
- 2
Download the WEBP
Adjust the quality if you want to shrink the file further.
Technical details
- A quality slider (40% to 100%, 90% by default) sets the balance between file size and sharpness; you'll see the original and resulting size before downloading.
- The WebP produced is lossy, although it keeps transparency. For logos or screenshots with text, check the result at a high quality to avoid blurry edges.
- EXIF metadata (camera, date, GPS location) isn't copied to the new file; phone photo orientation is applied to the pixels, so the image doesn't come out rotated.
- Limits: one image at a time, up to 25 MB and 40 megapixels.
Frequently asked questions
Is transparency preserved?
Yes, WEBP supports an alpha channel just like PNG, so transparent areas are preserved.
How much smaller does it get?
It depends on the image. For photos saved as PNG the saving is usually large; for simple graphics with few colors, the original PNG is already efficient and the difference is smaller. The tool shows both sizes before you download.
