Remove the background from an image

Uses a subject segmentation model (U²-Net, specifically its lightweight u2netp variant) that runs entirely in your browser via WebAssembly, with no server involved. The model computes which pixels belong to the main subject and produces a transparency mask applied over the original image.

    The AI analyzes the image and separates the subject from the background. The first time, it downloads about 19 MB in total (the AI model and the engine that runs it); after that, if they're still available, it's near-instant.

Technical details

The analysis runs at a fixed internal resolution of 320×320 pixels; that's not the size of the result, which is generated at your photo's original size once the computed mask is scaled back up. That limited internal resolution is why very fine edges can lose some detail. The input file can be up to 25 MB.

Privacy

The photo itself is never sent to any server: the cutout is computed entirely in your browser. The AI model and the runtime that executes it are downloaded when the tool needs them to work; as long as you stay on this page, that load is reused and isn't downloaded again. On a reload or a later visit, your browser may reuse those files from its cache or request them again, depending on its own caching behavior.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with any kind of photo?

It works best when there's a clear subject (a person, product, animal, object) against a reasonably different background. On very complex photos or very fine edges (loose hair, sheer fabric), the cutout may not be perfect in the details.

Is it free with no usage limit?

Yes. No watermark, no limit on the number of images: all processing happens on your own device.

Why does the first run take longer?

Because your browser downloads about 19 MB in total between the AI model (around 4.6 MB) and the engine that runs it in the browser (around 14 MB). As long as you stay on this page, the next photos process almost instantly; on a later visit it may download again if your browser didn't keep those files cached.
