VAT calculator online
Add or remove VAT from an amount using any percentage you choose, useful for any country or tax rate.
Total (incl. VAT)
120
Net amount (excl. VAT): 100
VAT amount: 20
This calculator is for informational purposes only and does not replace advice from a tax professional or a country's official regulations; always confirm the applicable VAT rate with the relevant tax authority.
Add or remove VAT from an amount depending on the direction you choose, using whatever percentage you enter, with no fixed rate tied to any country.
When adding VAT, it multiplies the net amount by (1 + percent/100) to get the tax-included total. When removing VAT, it divides the gross amount by (1 + percent/100) to get the net amount, and shows the difference as the VAT amount.
Use cases
- Working out the final price including VAT of a product or service for an invoice.
- Finding the net amount and VAT amount from a final price that already includes tax.
- Comparing how a price changes under different VAT rates, such as the standard versus a reduced rate.
How it works
- 1
Choose the direction
Select whether you want to add VAT to a tax-excluded amount or remove the VAT already included in a tax-included amount.
- 2
Enter the amount
Type the starting figure: the net amount if you're adding VAT, or the total including VAT if you're removing it.
- 3
Enter the VAT percentage
Type the applicable rate; the field is free text, so you can use the standard rate, a reduced rate, or any country's rate.
Technical details
Adding VAT computes gross = net × (1 + rate/100); removing VAT computes net = gross / (1 + rate/100) and VAT amount = gross − net.
Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator use one country's VAT rate?
No, the percentage is a free-text field with no fixed rate: you can use it with Spain's 21%, France's or the UK's 20%, Germany's 19%, Italy's 22%, Portugal's 23%, or any reduced rate or other country's rate.
What's the difference between adding and removing VAT?
Adding VAT starts from a tax-excluded amount and works out what to charge including tax. Removing VAT does the opposite: it starts from a tax-included amount and works out how much of it is net amount and how much is VAT.
