1 byte = 8 bits. The kilo, mega, giga… prefixes are decimal (powers of 1000), and the binary kibi, mebi, gibi… prefixes are powers of 1024:

Technical details

  • Drive makers use decimal prefixes, but Windows shows GiB labelled as "GB": that's why a 1 TB drive appears as about 931 "GB".
  • Network speeds are given in bits per second (Mb/s), not bytes: 100 Mb/s is 12.5 MB/s.
  • Results use 10 significant figures; very large or very small values are shown in scientific notation (e.g. 1e-10).

Frequently asked questions

Is a GB 1000 or 1024 MB?

Per the SI, 1 GB = 1000 MB; 1024 MiB make 1 GiB. In practice many people and some operating systems use "GB" for 1024³ bytes.

How many bits are in a byte?

8 bits.
