Word counter online

The word counter counts words, unique words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and lines as you type, without uploading your text anywhere.

It also shows the most frequent words in your text (with their share of the total) and estimates how long it would take to read it silently or say it aloud, at the reading speed you pick.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on a page?

It depends on font size and spacing, but as a common reference: a single-spaced page with 12pt text is usually around 500 words, and double-spaced around 250.

How many words per minute do people read?

An adult reading silently typically reads around 200-250 words per minute, which is why you can pick 150, 200 or 250 to match the calculation to your own pace.

How long does it take to read 500 or 1000 words?

At 200 words per minute, a 500-word text takes about 3 minutes and a 1000-word text about 5 minutes; the counter recalculates this automatically from your text.

What are the most frequent words?

It's a count of the words that repeat the most in your text, excluding articles, prepositions and other stopwords, so you can see at a glance which terms the content leans on.

How is reading time calculated?

The word count is divided by the reading speed you choose (150, 200 or 250 words per minute). The default is 200, a common standard for adults reading silently.

How is speaking time calculated?

It's an estimate based on 130 words per minute, a common pace for speaking aloud at a normal rate, separate from the configurable reading speed above and not adjustable. Actual time depends on the speaker's pace, pauses and emphasis, so treat it as a reference rather than an exact figure.

Are spaces counted as characters?

Both figures are shown separately: total characters and characters excluding spaces.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. All counting happens in your own browser; the text is never uploaded or stored anywhere.
